ZINCALUME® STEEL IS TESTED AND PROVEN TO LAST LONGER

Pioneer Water Tanks are manufactured of ZINCALUME® steel for increased service life and corrosion resistance. Next-generation ZINCALUME® steel AM125 introduces magnesium into the aluminum-zinc alloy coating, which improves galvanic protection by activating the aluminum.

The result is more effective corrosion resistance. BlueScope Steel research and testing have found that the addition of 2% magnesium is the optimum level of corrosion performance and coating integrity.

Zincalume Steel® Duplex Coatings (the combination of Barrier and Sacrificial Coatings)

Alloying of metals with differing corrosion performance allows the coating to be created that offers both barrier protection to protect the underlying steel, as well as sacrificial protection in the event the steel is cut, scratched, drilled or damaged. These coatings are very long-lasting and at the same time protect exposed areas of steel.

    ZINCALUME® Steel Questions and Answers

    Q. What are the differences between galvanized steel and ZINCALUME® steel?

    A. Galvanized steel is coated in almost pure zinc while ZINCALUME® steel is coated in an alloy of approximately 55% aluminum, 43.5% zinc and 1.5% silicon. Although both products are produced as continuously hot-dip coated products, they perform very differently, especially in the construction industry applications.

All coatings protect steel sheets from corrosive attacks by acting as a barrier to exclude air, water, and other corrosion caused by contact with the steel substrate.

The rate of corrosion of ZINCALUME® steel is initially very similar to that of galvanized steel. However, the longer life of Zincalume® steel is attributed to the rapid slowing down of this corrosion rate shortly after the initial exposure to the environment. This is due to the formation of aluminum-containing corrosion products that consequently add to the barrier protection of the coating.

All the while, the zinc present in the ZINCALUME® coating is available to sacrificially protect the steel at cut edges. This sacrificial mechanism is similar to galvanized steel in the typical (thinner) product thicknesses used in roofing and walling applications.

    Q. How does ZINCALUME® steel outperform galvanized steel?

    A. Extensive research by BlueScope Steel on aluminum/zinc alloy coatings has confirmed that the overall optimum performance occurs in an alloy of around 55% aluminum, 43.5% zinc and 1.5% silicon.

In ZINCALUME® steel this coating provides a milder degree of sacrificial protection at the cut edge, but because the coating survives longer, its protective effect is far more long-lasting.
